Snow Monkeys Nozawa Onsen

One very cute Snow Monkey near Nozawa Onsen by Mark Jobson

It is definitely a change of scenery in Nozawa today with clouds blanketing the surrounding mountains for a change. The sunshine and views we have enjoyed the last few days have disappeared.

Still not sure that it is the change we need yet as we are yet to see any new snow.

Some light rain has fallen this morning in the Village and we are hoping it may convert to snow up high as the temperatures drop.

So today or tomorrow may be a good day to go and visit the famous Snow Monkeys at Jigokudani in Yudanaka National Park. I actually saw a Monkey in Nozawa yesterday so thought a good time to mention our furry friends.

This park is inhabited by Japanese Macaques, which are also known as snow monkeys. The snow monkeys descend from the mountains during the day to sit in the warm waters of the onsen and return to the security of the forests in the evenings. This is the only known place in the world where wild monkeys bathe in natural hot spring water.

Take it easy life is good for a Snow Monkey by Mark Jobson

We take guests for a look most weeks on a Wednesday or Saturday in the afternoon so can ski in the morning and get a good National Geographic moment in the afternoon. Usually along with a visit to the famous Iiyama Sushi train!
